TEAS-Test of Essential Academic Skills

Nursing Program Pre-Entrance Exam

As of January 01, 2011 all students interested in applying for the Nursing Program must pass version 5.0 of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).  Version 5.0 must be passed with a minimum composite score of 62%.  Any other version taken on or after January 01, 2011 will not be accepted for entry. Beginning Fall 2007, all ADN and LVN-RN students must pass the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).  This is a diagnostic test that covers basic Math, Reading, English and Science. Students who fail to achieve a passing score must complete additional pre-nursing course work as directed by the nursing department. Students may prepare for this test by going to the ATI testing site ( http://www.atitesting.com/) go to Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) version 5.0.

The prospective nursing student that achieves a passing composite score of 62% or higher for version 5.0 on their 1st TEAS exam taken, will be eligible for additional points awarded towards their application.  No points are awarded towards a 2nd TEAS exam however, it must be submitted with your application to be considered for entry.  Please see "TEAS Remediation" below if you were unsuccessful in your 1st attempt.  There are specific policies on repeating the exam.

Where to take the Test of Essential Academic Skills

The TEAS exam may be taken at any institution that proctors the exam.  You may view the different schools in different cities at www.atitesting.comSan Diego State University  proctors the exam locally.  To make an appointment with their Testing Center, please call (619)594-0968 to take the exam.  Your score is immediately given to you upon completion of the exam.  To submit your score with the application to our program, a printout from the ATI website will suffice.

All applicants that were previously placed on the program waitlist prior to the February 16, 2010 criteria change in admission, should take the TEAS and submit the Individual Performance Profile to the Nursing Office for possible entry under the old application procedure.

TEAS Remediation Policy and Procedures- updated January 2011

As of January 01, 2011 all students taking the TEAS and wishing to apply for the Grossmont College Nursing Program must pass version 5.0 of the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS).  Version 5.0 must be passed with a minimum composite score of 62%. Any other version taken on or after January 01, 2011 will not be accepted for entry.

Versions 3.0/4.0:

If you currently have a passing TEAS score from version 3.0 or 4.0, you may apply in 2011 during the application period (July 05, 2011 – August 31, 2011*) using these scores.  We will continue to enforce all policies and procedures on taking the exam and remediation, if required.  Applications received during the March 01, 2012-April 30, 2012 application period and thereafter must have a passing TEAS score from version 5.0; versions 3.0 or 4.0 will no longer be accepted.

POLICY:

Upon completion of all prerequisites, the prospective nursing student must take the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) at a designated testing session*.  The prospective nursing student who achieves a passing composite score of 62% or higher will be considered for admission in conjunction with the New Admission Criteria enacted February 17, 2010.  Applicants under the New Admission Criteria are awarded points based on the 1st attempt of a passing TEAS score only.  Applicant are eligible to take the TEAS exam twice and apply however, no student will receive points for the 2nd attempt.

The prospective nursing student who achieves a less than passing composite score must remediate and retake the exam at another scheduled test date.  There must be no less than 30 days  between exam 1 and 2.  It is mandatory that students complete the required remediation within 1 year of your original TEAS exam date.  Failure to do so will result in the student’s ineligibility to apply to the program. If a student does not pass the TEAS after two attempts, the program will be unable to accept your application at any time.

PROCEDURE FOR REMEDIATION:

For those who achieve between 45% - 62% in the Math, English, or Reading Comprehension sections of the TEAS, you may self remediate prior to retaking the TEAS.

For those who achieve less than 45% in the Math, English or Reading Comprehension sections of the TEAS, the student must complete 1 of the following 2 options;

1. Course completion based upon the students individual remediation requirements.

a. Math remediation**- Math 88 with a grade of ‘Pass.’

b. English or Reading Comprehension remediation**- English 90 or 90R with a grade of ‘Pass.’

OR

2. Complete a TEAS review course** at Southwestern College.  Upon completion of the class, submit proof of completion to the Grossmont College School of Nursing with your application.

** Students have 1 year to complete these courses and/or a TEAS review course and submit proof of a passing grade or course credit to the Nursing Office from the date of the 1st attempt at the TEAS exam.   As of 1/01/11, you must take Version 5.0 if you are retaking the TEAS exam for a passing score.

The Nursing Department recommends the following optional items for additional practice with the TEAS exam:

1. Purchase of the TEAS Study Guide and of 2 on-line TEAS practice exams.To purchases these materials go to www.atitesting.com.

* San Diego State University offers the TEAS exam locally; please call the Testing Center at 619-594-0968 to reserve a seat for testing.  If you live out of the area, the ATI website www.atitesting.com will refer you to other colleges that offer the TEAS.
