Grossmont College to celebrate Black History Month

El Cajon - Students, faculty and staff at Grossmont College will join together to celebrate Black History Month through a series of performances and special events. Event sponsors include the Black Student Union of Grossmont College, and the Grossmont College Division of Student Services. All events are free and open to the public and will take place on the college campus.

The event schedule begins February 5 with a performance by African Drummers and Mask, featuring Teye Sa Thiosanne Dance Company with Master Drummer Yiriba in the Main Quad, 11 a.m.

February 12 features DJ Leon Meyers "Hip Hop on the Quad" with Melissa Adao and the Dance Department's Hip Hop Dancers.

Afro Cuban music will be featured February 19 beginning at 11 a.m. in the Main Quad. Performers include Gene Perry and his Afro Cuban Ensemble, followed by Professor Derek Cannon and the Grossmont College Afro Cuban Ensemble.

On February 21, the Grossmont College Gospel Choir will perform under the direction of Ken Anderson in the Main Quad at 11 a.m.

A storytelling concert by the Black Story Tellers of San Diego and guests will take place February 22, 7 - 8:30 p.m. in Room 220.

An African Capoeira performance will take place February 26, 11 a.m. in the Main Quad, with Os Malandros De Mestre Touro.

Friday 29 will present a Gospel Festival beginning at 7 p.m. in room 220. Performers will include the House of Metamorphosis Choir, directed by Carmella Bell; the North Park Apostolic Choir, directed by Edward Baltrip; the Martin Luther King City Choir of San Diego, directed by Ken Anderson; Dolores Stevens, Choir Director, Christ United Presbyterian Church; Bayview Baptist Church Choir, Steven Beard, Director; New Creation Church Choir, Michael Sanders, Director; and Bethel A.M.E. Men's Choir, Billie Collins Director.

Events will conclude Tuesday March 4, with a play presented in room 220 beginning at 7 p.m., "I Have Before Me A Remarkable Document Given To Me By A Young Lady From Rwanda" by Sonya Linden, with award-winning actor Monique Gaffney and Dale Morris.
