The Roly Poly Research Project (RPRP) is an informal hands-on student-focused research project at Grossmont College coordinated by the Biology Department. Roly polies (also known as pill bugs or woodlice) are common on campus. Our project goal is to understand how woodlice use the campus as habitat: what are the characteristics of "good" areas versus "bad" areas and how and why do individuals move between them?
Any student, faculty or staff may drop in to participate or see what we are doing any time.
The project usually meets on Friday afternoons in a Biology lab room during the semester. Check this page for updated meeting information each semseter (upper right).
Because it's fun! Also, students who attend regularly develop a variety of lab and environmental sampling skills and may take more responsible roles on specific projects. Those who stay with the project for several semesters may be able to take responsibility for writing up a poster about an experiment and presenting it at a local scientific conference.
