Appendix C: NANCE Interpreter Pay Levels:

Level I - $28.08/Hour

Completion of an Interpreting Training Program (ITP) Certificate or related ASL training at an accredited institution required. Two (2) years of interpreting experience or volunteering. Demonstrates intent to become a nationally certified interpreter or Certified Deaf interpreter (CDI). In house evaluation required.¹

Level II - $33.28/Hour

Must meet all the requirements of Interpreter Level I at the time of hire or advancement:

Passed the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) written knowledge exam or the CDI knowledge exam (submit proof). Four (4) years of ASL-English interpreting experience, or working as a Deaf Interpreter (DI). Submit RID transcripts showing training or proof of other ASL interpreting training.

Level III - $37.44/Hour

Must meet all the requirements of Interpreter Level I & II at the time of hire or advancement:

Must possess an associate's degree in any college major (preferably ASL, Deaf Studies, Interpreting, Linguistics or Sociology). Six (6) years of interpreting experience in the field of ASL-English interpreting, or six (6) years working as a DI.

Level IV - $43.68/Hour

Must meet all requirements in Interpreter level III & IV at the time of hire or advancement:

Must possess national certification with RID (CI, CT, CSC, NIC or CDI) or the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Level IV or V. National certification must be in good standing (submit proof yearly). Six (6) years of interpreting experience in the field of ASL-English, or working as a DI required.

Note: former certifications such as the American Consortium of Certified Interpreters Level III, or the National Association of the Deaf Level III, will be taken into consideration by the Interpreter Coordinator for Interpreter Level III placement).

Level V - $48.88/Hour

Must meet all the requirements in Interpreter Level IV & V at the time of hire or advancement:

Must possess national certification with RID or NAD. Certification must be current and in good standing (proof required yearly). BA/BS degree required, or the equivalent of ten (10) years of interpreting experience. Interpreting experience must include medical, legal, video relay, community and advanced post-secondary interpreting experience (UC or CSU Universities). Submit resume and references.
