Griffins get past Cypress, will host Pasadena Saturday Pasadena Photo Gallery Playoff Brackets Final state records & standing (11/22/11) In tonight's opening round of the Southern California Regional Volleyball Playoffs Grossmont held off a hard charging Cypress squad for a thrilling five set victory. 14th seeded Cypress (10-14) pushed #3 Grossmont to the limit before the Griffins closed out the opening round playoff match 25-20, 22-25, 27-25, 22-25, 19-17. Grossmont (21-2) jumped out to an early lead taking the first set 25-20, though the action wasn't as close as the score would indicate. Cypress then made a stand taking set two 25-22. After trailing 16-17 at one point the Chargers closed out the set with an 8-2 run. The third set saw Cypress run out to an early 11-4 lead, which they clung to until Grossmont leveled the score at 18-18 on a Bailee Reed stuff block. The two sides proceeded to trade points until the score was 25-all. Grossmont's Chelsea Amario made a nifty adjustment on a tight set for a kill and a 26-25 advantage. The Griffins won the set on a Cypress hitting error. The fourth set saw Cypress again jump out to an 11-4 advantage. This time the Griffins evened the score at 12-all, but neither team got out to more than a two-point lead. That was until Cypress opened up a 24-20 edge on consecutive kills by Kelsey Mersey, who then closed out the match with another kill for the 25-22 set win. That set the stage for a tense fifth set. Grossmont held a slim 8-6 advantage at the switch. The teams swapped points, until Cypress had a chance to close out Grossmont's season serving 15-14. The two sides played through a wrenching rally that ended with a block by Grossmont's Lindsay Spinning. Spinning registered five emotional blocks in the final set. The Griffins took a 16-15 lead on a Chelsea Almario kill. The sophomore came up huge in the fifth, with 4 critical kills. Cypress again answered with a clutch kill by Megan Kirkpatrick to knot the score at 16-all. Grossmont middle Courtney Bolton registered the last of her four kills in the final set to give Grossmont a 17-16 advantage, but another Kirkpatrick kill for Cypress made it 17-all. A double-contact violation by Cypress after a Grossmont dump made it match point for Grossmont at 18-17, and a Cypress shot went out of bounds to give Grossmont the win. An emotionally drained Grossmont squad crumpled into a jubilant mass on the court before gathering to shake hands with an equally drained Cypress squad. All-American outside hitter Denise DeVine led the Griffins with 29 kills in the match. All-Southern California libero Monik Richardson had a match-best 30 digs, while setter Gaby Clark dished out 49 assists. Mersey paced the Chargers with a team-best 22 kills and teammate Holly Webster turned in 19 digs. Grossmont will host #6 Pasadena, who swept #11 Bakersfield, on Saturday November 29th at 6:00 pm. |

Griffins earn 3-seed, host Cypress DeVine named 2nd Team All-American Playoff Brackets Final state records & standing Watch the Cypress match live (11/20/11) The postseason seedings and awards for women's volleyball were announced today following the coach's meetings in Pasadena. The Griffins, who went 20-2 in 2011 and were Co-Champions of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, were awarded the third seed in Southern California and will host #14 Cypress (10-10) Tuesday at 6:00 pm. The seeding is consistent with where the Griffins have stood in the coach's poll for most of the season, with Grossmont rated #3 in Southern California behind L.A. Pierce and El Camino. The Griffins have had a hold of the state's #5 rating for most of the season as well. Their opponent, Cypress, is the #23 team in the state, and just beat #14 Fullerton in 4 sets. Grossmont outside hitter Denise DeVine was named Second Team All American by the coaches. Libero Monik Richardson, who has committed to CSU Monterrey Bay, was named to the All-Southern California Regional team as well. All conference awards from the PCAC are forthcoming.

Bailee Reed and Monik Richardson have committed to play for universities next season Grossmont Head Coach Jamie Ivers announced this week. Richardson committed to Cal State Monterrey Bay and Reed will attend the University of Great Falls. Richardson, a sophomore who prepped at Eastlake High School, has been Grossmont's Libero the past two seasons. "Monik has been a stellar addition to our program," said Ivers. "She completely bought into the libero position from day one and has been top 5 in the state in digs for the past two season. She played outside hitter in high school and has been nothing but supportive in our decision to move her to libero. She has earned this opportunity that is being given to her to play to Cal State Monterey Bay. She is going to be an outstanding addition to their program." Reed is a 5-11 Opposite, and the lefty played her high school volleyball at Helix High. "Bailee has been nothing but a blessing to our program," said Ivers. "Her positive attitude and work ethic is contagious. She has improved so dramatically in the past two years and it's all because of her focus and drive to be better each and every day. She was focused on her goals from the very beginning and has never lost sight of them. She has created this opportunity to play at University of Great Falls all on her own and I'm so happy that she let me come along for the ride to get there." |

Grossmont College volleyball player Monik Richardson and San Diego Mesa water polo player Mojgan Malekpour are the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference's Women's Athletes of the Week. Richardson, a 5-foot-6 sophomore Libero from Eastlake High School, recorded 24 digs as the Griffins (19-2, 10-1) remained tied with Mesa for first place by sweeping Cuyamaca 25-`0, 25-13, 25-14. Richardson, who has signed with Cal State Monterey Bay, leads the PCAC with 5.68 digs per set, which ranks her fourth in Southern California and 10th in the state. |

Imperial Valley Photos (10/28) The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has selected Grossmont College volleyball Gabriella Clark and San Diego Mesa soccer player Kate Newman as its Women's Athletes of the Week for the week that ended Sunday. Clark, a sophomore setter from Maranatha High School, contributed 28 assists and three aces as Grossmont swept Southwestern 25-14, 25-15, 25-16. Two nights later, she had 37 assists and two aces in a 25-14, 25-15, 25-16 sweep of Imperial Valley. On the season, Clark is averaging 9.37 assists in conference, and owns a .297 hitting percentage. She also 3.838 grade-point average. |

Palomar Photos (10/21) (10/2) The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has named Cuyamaca College soccer player Jacquelyn Stewart and Grossmont volleyball player Chelsea Almario as Women's Athletes of the Week. Almario, a sophomore outside hitter from Eastlake High School, recorded 14 kills in Grossmont's 25-20, 25-21, 25-18 sweep of Santa Ana and came back with 16 kills in a 25-10, 25-13, 25-13 conference victory over Southwestern. She had a .510 hitting percentage and .612 hitting percentage for the week, while also contributing four aces, three blocks and 16 digs. She's played a key role in the Griffins' 10-1 record to date. |

(10/1) Victoria Rodriguez was named Honorable Mention in the state athletic association's Athlete of the Month recognition for September. For the month of Victoria had 111 kills, 24 aces, 65 digs, and 17 blocks. She was a key member of the Griffins starting lineup before suffering a season-ending knee dislocation with ACL and MCL tear in the Griffins match versus Cerritos. |

The Griffins secured the win 25-20, 25-21, 25-18. Along the way the Griffins made a huge jump in the state volleyball rankings from 15 to number 5. Grossmont has not lost a set since their 3 games to 1 victory over College of the Canyons on September 17th. The streak includes straight set wins over Saddleback, Cerritos and Santa Ana. DeVine is PCAC Women's Athlete of the Week(9/4/2011) Grossmont's Denise DeVine and San Diego Mesa soccer player Allyson Sherwood are the Pacific Coast Conference's Women's Athletes of the Week for the week that ended Sunday.DeVine, a sophomore outside hitter from Temescal Canyon High School in Lake Elsinore and a transfer from Cal State Dominguez Hills, recorded 54 kills in the Mesa Tournament as the Griffins went 3-1, defeating Antelope Valley, Moorpark and College of the Canyons while losing only to El Camino. DeVine had a .256 hitting percentage and .419 kill percentages in the tournament, also tallying 15 aces and 33 digs. She's helped Grossmont begin the season with a 8-1 record. |

Griffins take third in San Diego Mesa Tournament(9-17-11) The Griffins ran their season record to 6-1 as they took home third-place in this weekend's San Diego Mesa Tournament.On Friday the Griffins scored a pair of wins knocking off Antelope Valley College 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 and Moorpark College 20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-25, 15-13. Grossmont lost to El Camino 21-25, 17-27, 23-25 in Saturday's Semifinal, and then beat College of the Canyons 25-16, 27-25, 19-25, 25-16 to take third place. The Griffins host Cerritos College on Wednesday (9/21) at 5:00 pm. |

RIVERSIDE � Unable to get off to a fast start, the host Riverside City College (RCC) Tigers took one on their collective chins as the visiting Grossmont College (GC) Griffins blanked the hosts, 3-0, by the set (game) scores of 25-12, 25-16, 25-15, in a non-conference match at RCC's Catharine Huntley Gymnasium Wednesday night.
RCC (2-3) had its only lead of the match at 2-1 in the first set (game) before Grossmont vaulted to an 8-3 lead and was never headed, thanks to five attack errors by the Tigers and a kill by Grossmont's sophomore setter Gabriella Clark (Maranatha HS). Sophomore middle blocker Courtney Bolton (Santana HS) had a pair of block solos for the Griffins in that run.
Grossmont (3-0) had leads of 15-9, 18-10, and 23-11, before settling for the 25-12 win. It didn't help that RCC hit minus-.200 (five kills-11 attack errors/30 attempts), while the Griffins hit .286 (nine kills, three errors, 21 attempts).
In the second set, Grossmont built leads of 3-0, 13-9, 17-11, and 22-15, en route to a 25-16 win, although RCC did manage a brief 6-6 tie. RCC hit much better (.316 on nine kills), but Grossmont hit better (.421 on nine kills).
In the third set, the Griffins led, 5-1, 9-3, 15-7, 19-10 before closing out the match with a 25-15 win. Grossmont hit a whopping .526 (12 kills, two errors, 19 attempts), while RCC hit .067 (six kills, five errors, 15 attempts).
Freshman outside hitter Victoria Rodriguez (Rancho Buena Vista HS) led Grossmont with a
match-high 13 kills, Clark had a match-high 19 assists and sophomore libero Monik Richardson (Eastlake HS) had a co-match-high seven digs. Bolton finished with three block solos and a one block assist.
For the Tigers, sophomore outside hitters Robyn Miller (La Sierra Academy) and Rosetta Becerra (Corona / Centennial HS) each had a team-high six kills, freshman setter Courtney Flowers (Ramona HS) had nine assists and sophomore outside hitter Breeana Mayes (Patriot HS) added eight assists, and sophomore defensive specialist Christina Luna (Corona HS) added seven digs.
The win for Grossmont knotted the short all-time series between the two clubs at four wins each.
Grossmont will next play in the San Diego Mesa Tournament on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 16-17, while RCC will be idle until Friday, Sept. 23, when it hosts the Southwestern College Jaguars in a non-conference match beginning at 5 p.m.
