Step 1 Using P as the center, draw a circular arc that cuts the line twice. The larger the radius the better, but it should not be smaller than as indicated. |

Step 2 Use the same (or almost the same) setting on the compass to draw another circular arc as indicated. The arc should extend long enough to cut the arc to be drawn next. You can look at the next diagram before doing this. |

Step 3 Draw a similar arc on the other side, make sure that it cuts (intersects) the first green arc you draw. |

Step 4 Draw a line (with the help of a ruler) from P to the intersection of the two green arcs. This is the line we want. |

Step 5 Extend the line to the right as far as you can.

Step 6 Use the compass to mark two points on the line, equally far away from Q. The distance is arbitrary, but the larger the more accurate the result.

Step 7 Repeat step 2, 3, and 4 to construct a perpendicular line through Q. |
