Step 1 Draw a line from A going upwards. The length should be as long as AB, but the longer is better. The angle between two lines should be acute, but 60 degrees will give more accurate results.

Step 2 Use your compass to put 3 equal spacing marks on the green line. The distance between any two adjacent points can be anything bigger than 1 inch.
Step 3 Draw a line connecting points E and B.
Step 4 First extend the line segment AE in the direction towards A. Then draw 3 circular arcs as indicated. The radius is larger than DE (the larger the more accurate, but we kept it smaller than CE here due the limited amount of space). The centers for the circular arcs are points E, D, and C respectively. Note: the arcs should be long enough to ensure the success of the next step. |
Step 5 Use your compass to measure the gap FG, i.e. adjust your compass so that the width of its opening is the same as the length of FG. Slide down your compass to make markings on the middle and lower arcs as indicated. |
Step 6 Draw a line from D to the upper blue dot. Make sure that this line cuts the segment AB. Next draw a line from C to the lower blue dot. These two lines will then cut the segment AB into 3 equal parts! Check the accuracy of your construction before handing in. Points will be deducted if the lengths differ by more than the width of a normal pencil.
