BACKGROUND: In 2004 there were more than 25,000 cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in the U.S. Pertussis causes severe coughing spells, vomiting, and sleeping problems. Adults 19 through 64 years of age should substitute Tdap for one booster doses of TD. TD should be used for later booster doses. Health care workers who have direct patient contact in hospitals or clinics should get a dose of Tdap. A 2-year interval since the last Id is suggested but not required.
Health Care Students must have received Tdap in 2005 or years following to meet hospital/clinic requirements.
You may not receive Tdap vaccine in this office if you:
Had a severe allergic reaction after a previous dose of Tdap or to any component of the vaccine.
Have a severe allergy to latex. Talk to you doctor first.
Have epilepsy or another nervous system problem. Talk to your doctor.
Have a history of Guillain Barre Syndrome. Talk to your doctor.
Are moderately or severely ill at the time of the appointment. Wait until you recover.
Went into a coma or had a long seizure within 7 days after a dose of DTP or DTaP, unless a cause other than the vaccine was found.
