student slam poetry competition
Open to all Grossmont College students, poets will battle for the title of Grossmont College Grand SLAM champion with works addressing issues of social justice. Hosted by visiting writer and performance poet, Gill SOTU. Competition limited to 10-12 participants (names will be drawn from a hat for Round One, and the top 6 will advance to Round Two).
To all of the dynamic, entertaining, and inspiring slam poets who spoke their truth at this year's slam competition, take a bow!

Poet, singer/songwriter, MC, dj, artist, event host, Gill SOTU was the 2006 Grand Slam Poetry Champion of Ventura County, a three-time winner of the Borders Poetry Slam, and winner of the 2003 CSUCI Student Talent Competition. He recently opened for Grammy-nominated artist Sheila E, partnered and performed with the San Diego Symphony, and has been commissioned to create numerous poetry pieces for the United Way of San Diego and performed for TEDx San Diego in December 2013. He has been featured on NBC 7's Art Pulse TV and was named San Diego Raw Performing Artist of the Year in, both, 2012 and 2013.
In his performances, SOTU engages people to become their truest and most inspired selves and take an active part in their local and global community. He addresses topics such as social justice, racial empowerment, masculinity, and love. Weaving poetry into musical performances and improvisational songs, he is a forceful undercurrent of soulful, comedic, and thought-provoking passion. Charismatic, Gill quickly garners people’s attention and doesn’t let go until he says “thank you.”
As a teacher and social advocate, Gill is program director of the Free the Marquee, a non-profit arts/music venue in Golden Hill, San Diego. He has also facilitates poetry workshops within San Diego County’s juvenile detention center, including weekly workshops with local juvenile inmates.
His album, Neo Nostalgia, as well as his chapbook, How to Love Gods and Acrobats will be available for sale and signing after the performance.
