Thompson named Scholar Athlete of the Year(5/18) Men's basketball standout Kurt Thompson took home another postseason honor recently when he was named Grossmont College Men's Scholar Athlete for the school year 2008-09. Grossmont Athletic Director Jim Spillers presents the award to Thompson, right. "This award embodies the balance between academics and athletics. Kurt had over a 3.5 GPA in a minimum of 48 units," said Spillers. Grossmont head coach Doug Weber also announced that Thompson just signed a National Letter of Intent to Georgia College, a Division II institution in the Peach Belt League. Georgia was won 20 or more games the last five seasons and were 2009 NCAA Tournament participants. |

Three Griffins honored by Pacific Coast Conference(3/1) Grossmont Head Coach Doug Weber was pleased to announce that three members of Grossmont's 2008-09 squad were named in the PCC's postseason All-Conference Teams. Kurt Thompson and Chris Coleman were name to the All-PCC second team. Sophomore guard Tyrone Paige was an Honorable Mention selection by the conference coaches. Thompson, a sophomore guard played for Grossmont after transferring from his native Queensland Australia. Thompson averaged 12.4 points per game for the Griffins. He was also among the conference leaders in several statistical categories. Thompson was third in the conference in shooting percentage at 60%, fourth in steals with 2 per game, and third in blocks with 1.3 per game. Coleman averaged 12.1 points per game. Coleman was also the PCC's fourth leading rebounder at 7.7 per game. Paige averaged 11.6 points per game. Paige ranked in the top-10 in assists during conference play with 3.3 per game, and was third in steals at 2.1 per game. |

Grossmont falls to mighty City to close 2009(2/21) The Grossmont men closed out their 2009 season at home Saturday falling 73-98 to City College, the State's #3 team. Chris Coleman recorded another great outing scoring a team high 20 points along with 6 rebounds and two blocks. Travis Harski came off the bench to score 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting. Harski also pulled down 5 boards. Three Griffins chipped in seven points apiece; Tyrone Paige, Fox Mulholland and Seth Kluver. The Griffins finish the season at 8-8 in PCC play and 13-17 overall. |

Griffins even PCC record with win(2/14) The Grossmont men evened their Pacific Coast Conference record to 7-7 with a thrilling 57-56 win over visiting Imperial Valley College. The Griffins earned the tough victory despite being out-shot and out-rebounded by forcing turnovers, and getting to the free-throw line. Charles Conner came off the bench to provide the Griffins with the margin of victory. Conner completed a three-point play to give Grossmont the 57-56 win. Conner finished with seven points, and was a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Chris Coleman made 7-of-12 free-throws en route to a team-high 16 points. The freshman also hauled in nine rebounds. James Josephson provided the season's best dunk to date late in the first half. Running the left wing on a break just before time expired, Josephson received a pass just beyond the key and proceeded to dunk over an IVC defender. The play provided an exclamation point to the end of a solid half, and brought the crowd to their feet. |

Thompson is PCC's top playerSouthwestern Photos (1/5) Grossmont College basketball player Kurt Thompson is the Pacific Coast Conference's Men's Athlete of the Week. Thompson, a 6-foot-4 sophomore guard from Brisbane Boys College (high school) in Toowong, Queensland, Australia, was an all-tournament selection in the Courtyard by Marriott San Diego Central Tournament hosted by San Diego Mesa. He had 61 points, 17 rebounds, seven steals and 11 assists in three games. |

Griffins win conference opener(1/4) Saturday the Grossmont men continued to roll by winning their 2009 Pacific Coast Conference opener beating San Diego Mesa College on the road 72-68. Seth Kulver led the way for Grossmont with 17 points and teammate Charles Conner added 13 on a 5-for-8 shooting. The Griffins host conference rival Cuyamaca at 5pm on Wednesday January 7th. |

Griffins take third in Mesa TournamentGrossmont won two of three at the SD Mesa Tournament from December 28-30th, and took 3rd place. Kurt Thompson earned All-Tournament honors scoring 61 pts grabbing 17 rebounds, 7 steals and handing out 11 assists. |

Coleman named Athlete of the Week
(12/15) Grossmont College basketball player Chris Coleman has been honored as the Pacific Coast Conference Men's Athlete of the week for the week that ended on Sunday. Coleman, a 6-foot-4 freshman forward from Serra High School, helped lead the Griffins to two victories in three games and a second-place finish in the Santa Barbara City College Tournament with 38points on a 17-for-36 shooting performance. He had 20 rebounds in the three games. Coleman scored 12 points in a 65-59 win over Cypress in the first round, 13 points in a 68-62 victory over Santa Barbara in the semifinals and 13 points in a 54-45 loss to Oxnard in the finals. He made the all-tournament team. -(Coleman) played terrific defense on bigger opponents and had key rebounds against Cypress and Santa Barbara," Grossmont coach Doug Weber said. Grossmont hosts Miramar Saturday December 20th at 5pm in the PCC season opener for the Griffins. |
