LONG BEACH (5-11-08) -- The Grossmont College women's tennis team won their first team state title since 2004 -- and its state-record 11th in school history -- after the Griffins defeated Chabot College, 5-3, in the California Community College Athletic Association team championship at El Dorado Tennis Center.

Ranked No. 3 in Southern California, the Griffins defeated top-ranked Orange Coast College in the Southern California finals to advance to the state championships and face Northern California 's top-rated Gladiators (19-2).

In the match, Grossmont (18-1) pulled off several upsets to come away with the victory.
In singles play alone, No. 9-ranked VANESA REIBSTEIN defeated Chabot's No. 3-ranked Megan Kummer, 6-0, 6-4, while unranked BRIANNA McCLINTOCK posted a three-set win over 15th-ranked Ana Wilson in the No. 4 position.

After splitting the six singles matches, the biggest upset of them all was a 6-2, 6-4 triumph by No. 11-ranked Reibstein and McClintock over top-ranked Kummer and Amber Marsden, who won the Northern California doubles championship. The Griffin duo won the Ojai Tournament doubles championship the previous week.

2006 Mid-season report

(3/20) Coach Megan Haber's Griffins have had a near-perfect season thus far in 2006. With six regular season matches remaining, Grossmont has yet to lose to a community college opponent while compiling a record of 10-1; 7-0.
Their lone loss this year was to a NCAA Division I foe, the Friars of Providence College. The Griffins lost that match back on March 8th by the narrowest of margins, 4-5. In the contest, Grossmont's number one and two doubles teams posted strong wins over the Friars. The number-one pair of Yui Shimizu and Alyse Tyson, and number-two duo Anne-Maria Leistikow and Brianna McClintock each registered 8-6 triumphs.
The balanced Griffins hope to capture their fourth state championship in five years, after claiming three straight titles in 2002, 2003, and 2004.
Each member of Grossmont's squad has won a singles or doubles match this season. Number one singles player Shimizu is undefeated in conference play this season, as is number-two Tyson, and number-three Leistikow. Angela Viets, Bree Rangel and Renee Malcuit also have not lost a league match.
After the Griffins close out the regular season by hosting Orange Coast on April 13th, things will start to heat up with an array of post-season tournaments. The Pacific Coast Conference tournament runs from April 20-22, then the Ojai Valley Tournament a week later from April 27-30. The Southern California regionals begin on May 4th at the Barnes Tennis center and run until the May 6th. In the SoCal region, Grossmont is seen as a front-runner along with strong squads from Orange Coast College, and Saddleback. The Griffins defeated Saddleback in the season's first contest, winning narrowly 5-4 on February 9th. In that match Shimizu and Tyson each won in two sets.
