Major corporations usually have foundations that are open to solicitations for projects, especially in the areas where they operate. Some have special projects they favor. Examples: QUALCOMM, Target Foundation
Professional organizations occasionally offer grants for projects headed by members. Example: The American Association of Community Colleges has Microsoft funds available for development of connections between local industries and colleges.
