The Emperor of All Maladies Resource Center is an on-line resource for the 2013-2014 "One Book, One Campus" Project, a multi-disciplinary celebration of the Siddhartha Mukherjee's Pulitzer Prize winning book, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.
The Emperor of All Maladies details the evolution of cancer diagnosis and treatment, from its first documented appearances in ancient Egypt 5000 years ago to the latest developments in targeted therapy. Science writer and physician Mukherjee writes about the subject of cancer from the passionate and humane perspective of an historian, cellular biologist, and biographer, creating and uncharacteristically eloquent chronicle of a disease that is part and parcel of the travails of human history. The result is "a story of human ingenuity, resilience, and perseverance, but also of hubris, paternalism, and misperception. Mukherjee recounts centuries of discoveries, setbacks, victories, and deaths . . . . The book reads like a literary thriller with cancer as the protagonist" (Simon and Schuster).
Starting in fall 2013, Grossmont College with participate with other San Diego County colleges, universities, and other education-based institutions to host a campus-wide, interdisciplinary celebration offering a diverse intramural perspective from a wide range of departments, including but not limited to History, Health, Humanities, English, Science, Political Science, Communication, Graphic Arts and Dramatic Arts.
As with last year's "One Book, One Campus" celebration, the 2013-2014 Emperor of All Maladies Project will be an event-based and curricular experience, free of charge and open to the public. The "One Book, One Campus" concept promotes the sharing of instructional resources and learning strategies to unite regional campuses and their students in an intellectual dialogue about a single book with widespread, crossover appeal. The 2011 "One Book, One Campus" featured book by award-winning science writer Rebecca Skloot was The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks, chronicling one of the most important medical discoveries in history and exploring how the unsung heroes behind the HeLa cell helped to forge our modern code of medical ethics. In 2012-2013, "One Book, One Campus" celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Rachel Carson's groundbreaking book Silent Spring, You can still access the websites for these former projects and their many useful resources by visiting the "Links" section of this site.
