In 2010, Grossmont College led the San Diego college community in the "One Book, One Campus" county-wide project by launching the Henrietta Lacks Project. Beginning with the Fall 2014 semester, the "One Campus" learning experience is changing to the global theme of "water."
The project will differ from the "One Book, One Campus" concept in a number of significant ways.
Firstly, rather than focusing on a central book or author, the project will instead examine a centrally connective theme. Students and instructors have the option to select literature of interest to them that invokes the subject of water in ways specific or general—or, not use literature at all.
Secondly, because of the subject's broad application, the "Water" project is interdisciplinary. It can be approached by students and faculty in any number of ways that are relevant to their disciplines. Any instructor can participate by sharing resources, assignments, and project ideas.
Thirdly, the project will be ongoing, instead of changing annually. As a student, you'll have an opportunity to re-explore the "water" theme from different disciplinary perspectives, assignments, and projects. As an instructor, if this year's Water Project activities inspire you, next year you can implement curriculum you designed this year or even take a more active role in the Water Project committee.
