A very common misperception about Financial Aid is that you cannot use it while receiving GI Bill Benefits and that is INCORRECT. 

Students may be eligible to earn Financial Aid depending on their income, household size, GPA (minimum 2.0), completion rate (must complete over 60% of courses attempted) and previous education completed. Remember that your GI Bill income is non taxable income. However many students are not eligible for Financial Aid their first year after separating from the military because FAFSA uses the income taxes from the previous year or two years.

After your first year of separation you are more likely to be eligible and can speak to the financial aid office about an adjustment of income. Brenda Gates is the Financial Aid Liaison for Veteran Students.

When in doubt apply for Financial Aid, the application is free and can allow you more financial freedom to focus on your academics instead of trying to work to make extra income when you should be spending your time studying.

After applying for financial follow the following steps to see your eligibility:

1. Check your application status on your webadvisor account under Grossmont Financial Aid 
2. Submit appropriate forms requested available in the Grossmont Financial Aid website
3. Check back on your webadvisor account your financial aid award and accept your financial aid award
4. Attend classes, do well in your classes and earn your financial aid award

Types of Financial Aid (one application FAFSA determines your eligibility for the aids listed below see each one for more details or additional steps)

• Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOG)- pays tuition fees only, does not cover student fee, health fee or books. 
• GCCCD Promise Grant- must complete both FAFSA and Promise Pledge
• Pell Grant- Federal Grant, typically does not have to be re-paid unlike loans see link for more details (maximum aid 6 years, must maintain minimum 2.0 GPA)
• Cal Grant- California Grant for CA residents, typically does not have to be re-paid unlike loans must submit high school or college GPA verification (maximum aid 4 years, must meet 2.0 minimum GPA.
• Loans- are typically not recommended but if you must and you have the option for a subsidized loan choose that option since it allows you to defer your interest.
