The forthcoming interdisciplinary “One Book, One Campus” program that will feature many departments studying Siddhartha Mukherjee’s The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.   
 
Activities will be scheduled throughout the 2013-2014 academic year, including the Curriculum Design Project, in which faculty will be designing assignments based on the Mukherjee's book (or excerpts from it) and sharing those assignments on the Emperor of All Maladies Website. Beginning August 19, Media Arts Professor William Snead will invite film students to form a working group to undertake a documentary about The Emperor of All Maladies as well as the many aspects of Grossmont’s participation in this year's "One Book, One Campus" project.  Throughout the academic year, Roxanne Tuscany will organize a Grossmont College debate team with cancer and Mukherjee's book as the subject. 
 
Also in the works, faculty from across the disciplines will be sharing their insights into The Emperor of All Maladies and the role that cancer plays in their fields.  The series will begin in late fall, 2013 and continue into the spring semester of 2014.  Information about when and where, as well as details about the participating lecturers, will be announced soon.  Here's a preview of some of the other exciting, rewarding, and inspiring events to come.  Look for full details as they appear on our Calendar.

Sculpture Exhibit Hyde Art Gallery

SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 

Beginning in October 2013, the San Diego Center for Ethics in Science and Technology will be partnering with Grossmont College, SDSU, UCSD and the Fleet Science Center to offer a series of monthly talks from cancer specialists from across the country, including Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee.  These talks will also be televised on UCTV and made available to download on this website.  Specific details coming soon.  Based on the Ethics Center talks, The Voice of San Diego will also be running a series of op-ed pieces that will also be accessible on this website.

NURSING POSTER EXHIBIT, upstairs lobby of the Health Science Building
Sharon Sakora and Peter Brooks, MS, RN, of the Grossmont College Nursing Department, have helped to organize an exhibit of student generated posters featuring the theme of cancer and the topics of Siddhartha Mukherjee's The Emperor of All Maladies, which the Nursing department has made a required summer reading text.  In fall 2013, every course in the Nursing Program will be designing assignments around the book, and the student poster presentations will be the culmination of these assignments.
 

   
NOVEMBER-DECEMBER

November 14th
Enjoy a special cancer-fighting dinner prepared by award-winning Chef Joe Orate. Nutritionist Christine Zoumas will offer a brief overview of the menu choices and their cancer fighting properties, discussing why certain foods are helpful in the prevention of cancer and others are deleterious. 
 
November 19th
Griffin Gate, 7:00 p.m.
In the return of this popular event, Media and Communications Professor Roxanne Tuscany hosts a lively parliamentary-style debate over the controversial topics represented in Siddhartha Mukherjee’s book.

Suda House, Hyde Gallery and the Grossmont College Art Department collaborate with the English Department to host the Grossmont Faculty Art Show, depicting cancer experiences and cancer perspectives.   Also featured will be an auction of faculty works and artwork gifts, the proceeds from which will be given to cancer research.

Wednesday, April 23: Jeopardy! Championship
7:00 - 9:00 p.m., Griffin Gate
Grossmont College, in collaboration with KNSD/Channel 7, will host a Jeopardy! style game show event featuring questions drawn from Siddhartha Mukherjee’s book, The Emperor of All Maladies.  Teams from UCSD, Point Loma Nazarene University, and Grossmont College will compete for top honors, including $150 and tickets to Ellen for each member of the winning team; $75 for each member of the second place team, and $50 for the members of the 3rd place team.  Hosted by NBC’s Artie Ojeda, this Jjeopardy! style college bowl event will feature questions drawn from Siddhartha Mukherjee’s book, The Emperor of All Maladies.
 
Grossmont College’s own Derek Cannon and his Jazz Ensemble will develop and perform jazz variations on the popular “Jeopardy” theme song to celebrate this momentous event.  This event is sponsored by the One Book, One Campus project, with support from The San Diego Ethics Center and KNSD/Channel 7.

Thursday, May 1: Cramps & Agues: Malady and Literature

Local writers Cali Linfor, Karl Sherlock, and Nancy Cary, together with select students of the GC Creative Writing Program, perform original poetry, fiction, and memoir on the theme of “malady and disability” in this unique reading co-sponsored by Grossmont College's 18th Annual Literary Arts Festival.
