ASL-English Interpreter Handbook

Employment

Availability

All interpreters are responsible to update their availability with the Interpreter Coordinator regularly. Please communicate all availability changes by e-mail.

Employment as an ASL-English Interpreter, a non-academic /non-classified employee (NANCE), will be contingent upon DHH student enrollment, and/or at the discretion of the A.R.C. Please disclose any dates needed off (vacations, personal appointments, etc.) before accepting work. All Interpreters are responsible to know when campus is closed. Campus closures are posted online in the class schedule online in  WebAdvisor: https://www.grossmont.edu

When assigning interpreters, the Interpreter Coordinator must consider the following criteria:

  • Deaf/HH student interpreter preferences.
  • National certification, Deaf Heritage Signers, education level, and interpreting strengths.
  • The student's language modality (ASL, Signed English) and history of exposure to sign language.
  • Class subject difficulty and length.

The ultimate goal of scheduling work is to provide the best match between the interpreter and the DHH student, the instructor, and the class subject.

Note: NANCE interpreters working with the A.R.C. cannot accept interpreting assignments from agencies for direct services to DHH students in the classroom (Grossmont). Other GCCCD departments may have similar rules for employment as well.

Professional Development

Interpreters are encouraged to seek out professional development and to join local professional interpreting organizations (i.e. San Diego County RID, YPIN etc.). Advancement to the next interpreter pay rate is contingent upon obtaining national certification, professional development, and a higher education degree (See Appendix C).
