2008 Tryouts Coming

Grossmont Head Coach Karen Caires is looking to reload the squad for the 2008-2009 season.

The 2007-08 Griffins finished in second place in the Pacific Coast Conference and are looking to improve on their 18-12 overall record.

Tryouts are August 25-29 and those interested must enroll in ES 206. It meets from 12:20-2:20 M-F.

Dearman commits to CSU Los Angeles

Grossmont center Shatori Dearman has agreed to continue her playing career at Cal State Los Angeles, coach Karen Caires announced.

"Shatori has worked very hard this past year and continues to grow and improve her game," said Caires. "She has posted a 4.0 in the classroom and was First team All-Conference and team MVP. So, she is getting it done both on and off the court. I am so proud of her and although we will miss her I am so excited to see her play next year at Cal State Los Angeles."

Additionally, first team All Conference honors went to Dearman and LaTasha Dowell.

Gearing up

EL CAJON (2-21-08) -- In a huge look-ahead to Saturday's regular-season finale against Imperial Valley, the offense for Grossmont College came out flat yet scored when it needed to down the stretch, staving off visiting Mira Costa College, 56-50, in Pacific Coast Conference action Wednesday (Feb. 20).

It was the Spartans' first visit to Grossmont in 15 seasons after resurrecting their program over the summer.Read more

Griffs take down Mesa

(2/10) El Cajon - Grossmont received balanced scoring to down visiting Mesa 66-52 for a PCC victory.

Shatori Dearman scored 23 points (plus 11 rebounds) to lead both clubs. Meghan Ehmke scored 6 points, pulled 12 rebounds and dished out 8 assists.

Brionna Baker (19) and LaTasha Dowell (13) helped round out the scoring.

Grossmont downs City College, 84-53

(1-19) Grossmont evens conference record at 2-2 with an 84-53 victory over visiting City College. Freshman center Shatori Dearman put up 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore forwards Alexis Bertelsen and Brionna Baker scored 13 points apiece.

The Griffins will travel to Southwestern College for the teams' first meeting of the PCC season at 7pm on Wednesday.

Griffins beat Coyotes on the boards

(1/12) The Grossmont women picked up their first PCC win of the season with a 70-38 beating of visiting Cuyamaca.

The Griffins outrebounded the Coyotes a whopping 76-46 on the night. Included was a school record 42 offensive rebounds.

Brionna Baker had her best performance of the season with 20 points & 12 rebounds.

Shatori Dearman (right) had a game-high 16 rebounds and 12 points. Also contributing to the win were Liz Reidel (11 points 15 rebounds), and Meghan Ehmke (5 points 8 rebounds).

Grossmont next travels to San Diego Mesa on Wednesday January 16th for a 7pm game.

Citrus 78, Compton 58

(12/29) El Cajon, CA - The Citrus Owls jumped out to an early lead against Compton College and never looked back, winning 78-58.

Grossmont 46, Mt. San Jacinto 36

(12/29) El Cajon, CA - The Grossmont women won a defensive battle with Mt. San Jacinto 46-36 to take third place in their own Holiday Tournament. The Griffins staked themselves to a 26-14 halftime lead before Mt. San Jacinto made a late run to close the gap. The Griffins held on late and made enough free throws to win by 10, avenging a 43-61 loss on November 14th at Mt. San Jacinto.

Grossmont (9-8) point guard La Tasha Dowell scored 14 points to go along with four rebounds. Forward Meghan Ehmke earned All-Tournament Team honors, and pulled 10 rebounds in the win. 6-1 center Shatori Dearman had 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots.

For Mt. San Jacinto (8-7) Michelle Simmons led the way with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Teammate Jennifer Marquez added 7 points and 8 rebounds.

Saddleback 65, Golden West 49

(12/29) El Cajon, CA - In Saturday's Consolation Championship Saddleback College handed Golden West a 65-49 loss. Saddleback's Joy Mason scored 11 points and hauled in eight rebounds to earn All-Tournament Team honors.

Other standouts for Saddleback were Rekeshia Jones (14 points, 14 rebounds), Cassie Klockgether (14 points, 6 assists), and Marissa Douglass (12 points).

Golden West received a big game from Deena Hyman with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Day Two

Citrus 71, Grossmont 42

(12/28) El Cajon, CA - Citrus romped the host Griffins to advance to the Championship of the 20th Annual Grossmont Holiday Tournament.

Citrus will face Compton College in Saturday's 5pm Championship.

Compton 59, Mt. San Jacinto 56

(12/28) El Cajon, CA - In the third straight close finish of the day Compton College edged Mt. San Jacinto 59-56. Compton scored in the closing seconds, and iced the game with free throws as Mt. San Jacinto turned the ball over on their final two possessions with under 10 seconds remaining with a chance to tie or take the lead.

LaTara Buck led the scoring for the Tartars with a game-high 23 points. Teammate Channel Rainey registered a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Antonitta Veto pulled down a game-high 19 rebounds in the winning effort.

Mt. San Jacinto's Michelle Simmons came through with a triple-double of 15 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals.

Compton advances to Saturday's 5pm Championship game against Citrus.
Mt. San Jacinto will play in the Third-Place game at 3pm on Saturday against Grossmont.

Golden West 84, Bakersfield 73 OT

(12/28) El Cajon, CA - In the second of two consecutive overtime games, Golden West edged Bakersfield 84-73 to move into Saturday's consolation final versus Saddleback.

Golden West used a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring in double figures. Deena Hyman led the way with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Other double-digit scorers were Monica Chavez 17, Raelene Arganda 14, Lindsey Roe 12, and Klarissa Stovall 10.

Bakersfield was paced by a monster game by 5-8 Cristen Perry with 24 points and 18 rebounds.

Golden West faces Saddleback at 1pm in Saturday's Consolation Championship.

Saddleback 59, Mesa 52 OT

(12/28) El Cajon, CA - Saddleback College advanced to the consolation finals with a 59-52 overtime victory over San Diego Mesa.

Saddleback's Rekeshia Jones poured home a team best 25 points on 11 of 18 shooting. The 6-3 center also blocked six shots and grabbed six rebounds. Teammate Joy Mason was the only other double-figure scorer for Saddleback (11-3) with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.

For Mesa Joy Edwards was the bright spot with a double-double of her own with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Mesa fell to 3-11 with the loss.

Saddleback will face Golden West at 1pm Saturday for the consolation championship.

Day One

Citrus 83, Bakersfield 57

(12/27) El Cajon, CA - Citrus College routed Bakersfield in the final game of day one in the Grossmont Holiday Tournament. Jessica Nieves paced Citrus (11-6) with 21 points.

Citrus advances to face Grossmont at 7 pm in Friday night's semifinal game.
Bakersfield will play Golden West at 3pm Friday in the consolation semifinal.

Grossmont 71, Golden West 42

(12/27) El Cajon, CA - The host Griffins took a modest six point halftime lead and turned it on for a 71-42 rout of Golden West. Grossmont used a balanced scoring attack to outpace the Rustlers.

Grossmont's Meghan Ehmke contribute a huge double-double of 14 points and 17 rebounds. The Sophomore out of West Hills High in Santee was scorching 6-9 from the field. Guard La Tasha Dowell turned in a solid effort with 12 points and eight rebounds. Alexis Bertelsen, a 5-11 guard was the third double-figure scorer with 10 points and five rebounds.
Shatori Dearman, a 6-1 freshman center just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. The Eastlake High product also blocked three shots.

Golden West's Monica Chavez led her team with 13 points and four steals. Sophomore Heather Habekost chipped in with 11 points three rebounds and three steals.

Grossmont (8-7) advances to Friday's semifinals at 7pm to face Citrus.
Golden West (5-8) will play in the consolation semifinal at 3pm versus Bakersfield.

Mt. San Jacinto 52, Saddleback 51

(12/27) El Cajon, CA - In the second game of the Grossmont Holiday Invitational, Mt. San Jacinto edged Saddleback 52-51. Michelle Simmons paced Mt. San Jacinto with a team-best 17 points. Simmons, a 5-7 sophomore, had 10 rebounds and six assists.

Mt. San Jacinto (8-5) dominated the boards out-rebounding Saddleback 51-38. Contributing to the rebounding edge was 5-11 Thalia Benjamin with 17 rebounds and 13 points, and 5-8 Jennifer Marquez with 10 rebounds.

Saddleback's (10-3) Cassie Klockgether was the game's high-scorer with 20 points. A 5-7 point guard out of San Diego's Montgomery High was 8-16 from the floor, and snagged 3 steals.

Mt. San Jacinto will move into Friday's semifinals at 5pm to face Compton College.
Saddleback will face San Diego Mesa in the consolation semifinal Friday at 1pm.

Compton 55, Mesa 54

(12/27) El Cajon, CA - In game one of the 20th Annual Grossmont Holiday Tournament Compton College slipped by San Diego Mesa 55-54. Compton jumped out to a 32-18 halftime lead, but Mesa clawed back in the second half to make it a game.

Compton's LaTara Buck lead her team with 17 points on 6-of-22 shooting, including three three-pointers. The 5-9 guard out of Crenshaw High was also a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line. Teammate Alexis Robertson kicked in with 14 points, canning 2 of 3 three-pointers. The Freshman from Washington Prep also contributed five steals for Compton (7-7).

For Mesa (1-11), local product Joy Edwards (Granite Hills High) registered a game-best 21 points on 6-8 shooting, including 2-2 from three-point range. Edwards also garnered nine rebounds, four steals and four assists.

Compton advances to face Mt. San Jacinto Friday at 5pm in the semifinals.
Mesa moves to the consolation semifinals to face Saddleback on Thursday at 1pm.

Griffins hold on to lead, beat East LA

EL CAJON (11-22-07) -- Grossmont College saw a 14-point lead disappear thanks to the streak shooting of East Los Angeles guard Megan Iloff. But when the Griffins defense shut her down over the final two minutes, the hosts were able to break a deadlock by scoring the game's final five points from the foul line for a 64-59 non-conference victory.

Iloff was a thorn to Grossmont all night Friday (Nov. 21), scoring 10 points in the second half or passing to her Huskies teammates for open looks down the stretch, erasing a 43-29 deficit to take a 57-56 lead. Read More

Griffins enjoy home cookin'

EL CAJON (11-17-07) -- Following a pair of tough setbacks in the Inland Empire, Grossmont College looked mighty comfortable in its home opener Friday (Nov. 16), dominating the boards for several second-chance scoring opportunities to down Moorpark, 63-58, in non-conference action.

The Raiders twice held the lead for brief moments midway through the second half, only to see the Griffins immediately respond to re-take the advantage with inside scoring, as center SHATORI DEARMAN paced the hosts with 13 points and nine rebounds. Read More
